Susan Wente, CNM
"I love women’s health. It’s so important. I’ve found there's a window of opportunity, when a woman’s pregnant and they’ll do anything for their baby, that they will make the life changes they need to do."
|
Experience: |
Susan has a doctorate in public health, and has been a nurse-midwife for more than 25 years. She has assisted in more than 2,500 births. She was director of the midwifery programs at Seton HealthCare Network in Austin, Texas, and at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, where she also served as an assistant professor in the Department of OB/GYN. She also has been an instructor at the University of Mississippi, and was a nurse-midwife at the Women's Health Center in Charleston, West Virginia. |
|
Education: |
She earned her certification in nurse-midwifery at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston and her master’s degree in public health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Susan earned her bachelor’s degree at Grand Valley State University.

Practice Perspective: |
Susan directs the Healthy Beginnings program at our Benson Street center. After all of the years, and more than 2,500 births, she says she still finds the work stimulating. "This has been a good career choice, but there’s still work to be done. Women’s health care has made leaps and bounds, but it’s still not as accessible as it needs to be."

Personal: |
In the limited spare time available to a midwife, a wife, and a mother, Susan enjoys weaving, reading ("I love Harry Potter") and swimming. She and husband Dale, an endoscopy nurse at Spectrum in GR, have two children, Robert and Megan. They live in the family cottage on a lake near Newaygo that has been in the family for more than 100 years. "We love the seasons, we’re back with our family, and the living is like it was when I grew up. Everything is good."
