Loan Forgiveness
Student Loan Repayment Options
Family Health Care providers and employees are eligible for various student loan repayment options.
National Health Service Corps Student Loan Repayment (NHSC-LRP)
All Family Health Care locations are National Health Service Corps (NHSC) approved sites. Physicians (MD/DO), dentists (DDS/DMD), nurse practitioners, physician assistants, licensed clinical social workers, licensed professional counselors, and dental hygienists are eligible to apply for loan repayment assistance in exchange for working in a health professional shortage area (HPSA) at an approved NHSC site. Loan repayment funding is tied to the HPSA score and provides a tax-free loan repayment award of up to $50,000 in exchange for an initial two-year full-time service agreement. Participants may receive additional loan repayment up to a maximum of $20,000 for each additional year of service until the loan balance is completely forgiven. Half-time service commitment options are also available.
Michigan State Loan Repayment Program (MSLRP)
The Michigan State Loan Repayment Program (MSLRP) allows eligible full-time health care providers to receive a tax-free loan repayment award of up to $300,000 over a period of up to ten years. Participants must enter into consecutive two-year service agreements and be employed for at least 40 hours per week. Eligible providers include dentists (DDS/DMD), physicians (MD/DO), physician assistants, nurse practitioners, psychiatrists, clinical or counseling psychologists, licensed professional counselors, clinical social workers, and mental health counselors.
Behavioral Health Loan Repayment Program (BHLRP)
The Behavioral Health Loan Repayment Program (BHLRP) incentivizes behavioral health care providers to practice in underserved areas. The program prioritizes practitioners who provide services to child and adolescent populations. BHLRP provides up to $300,000 in loan repayment over a period of up to ten years, through contractual service obligations periods of two years. To be eligible, the practitioner must provide at least 32 hours of direct behavioral health care services per week. Eligible providers include psychiatrists, psychologists, licensed masters social workers, limited licensed masters social workers, licensed marriage or family therapists, and limited licensed marriage or family therapists.
Public Student Loan Forgiveness (PSLF)
Public Student Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) is available to full-time employees (minimum of 30 hours per week) with Direct Loans. The PSLF program forgives the remaining balance on your Direct Loans after you’ve made 120 qualifying monthly payments under an accepted repayment plan while working full-time for an eligible not-for-profit or government organization. Borrowers with Direct Subsidized Loans, Direct Unsubsidized Loans, Direct PLUS Loans, and Direct Consolidation Loans are eligible to participate in PSLF.
Please note: You must meet provider eligibility to qualify for loan repayment programs. Qualified providers are eligible to apply for loan repayment through state or federal loan repayment programs but can only receive funding through one program. PSLF may be combined with state or federal loan repayment programs. Awards are not guaranteed and are dependent on several factors such as HPSA scores, designated priority providers, state and federal funding, etc.
